greatmindsDFW ATW is excited to host our 2015 GREAT MINDS™ event “Building Mobile Applications Workshop” for Middle and High School Girls at the AT&T Headquarters in Downtown Dallas on Saturday, October 24, 2015. This extremely popular workshop, developed by The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) and Oasis @ AT&T, has been delivered to 1200+ kids nationwide and to over 350 kids in the DFW area.

This introductory workshop will walk you through the basics of developing a mobile app. There is no programming background or pre-requisite required. Middle and high-school age girls are eligible to attend (6th to 12th). The workshop will be a combination of lecture and hands-on training. We will begin with the basics of the Internet and mobile apps, introduce students to the Android mobile development environment, cover fun application building exercises, and have practitioners available to talk about careers in the field. Each student will be able to keep and use the mobile application development software on the laptop they bring to class.

Requirements: The participants will be required to bring their own laptops and chargers.
If you have an Android device, please bring it along with a USB connectors to view your work.

Class size is limited so register now! Please note we must have a valid email address when registering to receive class software to download. In addition, each participant will need a GMAIL account in order to access the software.

After registration you will be sent four items in an email:

  1. Hardware requirements (laptop with Vista, win7 or 8 or MAC)
  2. Mobile application sofltware download instructions
  3. AT&T Location & security information with Parking Instructions
  4. Three Required Event Participation Permission Form

We do not recommend trying to share a laptop between participants. The mobile application we will be using does not support iPhone/iPad. Cancellations must be made before October 20th for refund. This not a programming syntax/language kind of class. For additional questions, contact Kristy Bonner or Sarita Dharankar for questons related to the workshop. If you need to speak to someone in person, email Kristy or Sarita and we’ll arrange a time to call you back.To learn more about the non-profit DFW*ATW (Dallas Alliance of Technology and Women) - www.dfwatw.org.

About GREAT MINDS™
ATW launched the GREAT MINDS™ initiative ten years ago as a step to fulfill its mission of encouraging women and girls to enter technology fields. GREAT MINDS™, which stands for Girls Reaching for Education and Moving in Directions for Success, is an outreach for kids, specifically girls, in middle school, high school and college. GREAT MINDS™ helps young girls become interested in technology, and hopes to influence school-age girls to join math and science programs. The GREAT MINDS™ Program bridges the gap between industry and schools (students, educators and parents) by establishing community programs and groups focused on reaching out to young girls. The programs under this initiative have included one day events, camps and scholarships.

"Studies have shown that as girls get more interested in STEM fields throughout their youth, they are more likely to pursue careers that use STEM to solve today's challenges. Through our GREATMINDS programs, we expose young girls to women that have pursued STEM careers and encourage them to be interested in "cool" technology fields. GREATMINDS provides a great place for them to start!”
